The Importance of Omega-3 Supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids, found naturally in krill, fish, nuts and other foods sources, are much talked about these days—and for good reason. To understand what’s behind the enthusiasm towards Omega-3 supplements, a closer look at two particular substances is needed: docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. Don’t worry though, you can simply call them DHA and EPA, for short.

The importance of Omega-3 supplements is largely due to these two “essential fatty acids.” Fatty acids are critical for maintaining good health, particularly as fuel for your body’s many kinds of cells. Essential fatty acids, like DHA and EPA are just that: essential. This means that you must consume them, as they are types of molecules that your body cannot create on its own. Because it is often hard to get enough of these in our diet many are including Omega-3 supplements in their daily health regimen.

So what are the benefits of Omega-3 supplements containing DHA and EPA? Studies have shown that these Omega-3s can support heart health. They may also help support healthy trigyceride levels.  The final verdict is still out on some of the other benefits of Omega-3 supplements, but some studies suggest that they may have a future role to play supporting mood.
